Visit the Saintonge Romanesque Abbey Fontdouce.

From the INTER-Hotel Cognac, make a detour to Saint Bris des Bois, at the edge of the Angoumois and Saintonge where stands a remarkable monastery, the Abbey of Fontdouce, founded in 1111 by William of Conchamp, lord of Taillebourg.

In a green setting, nestled between forests of trees and vines, the building, originally in Romanesque style, has undergone many transformations over the centuries, as today two superimposed Romanesque chapels, dating from 1120 , a sumptuous Gothic inspired dining room and the recently renovated monks' quarters bear witness.

The successful marriage of the austerity Romanesque style and the luminosity of the Gothic are the basis of the originality of this monument, which was partially destroyed during the wars of religion and is now classified as a historical monument.

The site also owes its reputation to the festival of classical music and jazz, organized every summer.
